Eden Reforestation Projects
We’ve partnered up with an incredible organisation: Eden Reforestation Projects. We simply love what they stand for: people and the planet.
Eden Reforestation Projects are ongoing in 8 different countries where they’ve already planted more than 800 million trees. Eden is now recognised as one of the most cost-effective reforestation projects on the planet. They act on behalf of both the environment as well as the hard-working tree planters putting your trees in the ground.
We plant mangrove trees
Now why do we plant mangrove trees? Mangroves are one of the most effective and economic methods of offsetting carbon emissions. Each mangrove tree planted by Eden Reforestation Projects removes 12kg CO2 per year.
Mangrove trees are the tree version of a superhero. They’re real champions when it comes to biodiversity and giving a one-two punch to climate change.
They store carbon like a boss.
On average, a mangrove forest stores 2 to 4 times more carbon than tropical terrestrial forests. They’re like the Pac-Man of dirty air.
They improve water quality.
The complex mangrove root systems filter nitrates, phosphates & other pollutants out of the surrounding water. They’re literal sponges.
They prevent erosion.
The dense mangrove roots not only bind soils, they also build them. The above-ground roots slow down water flows and encourage sediment deposits.
They’re a natural buffer for storm surges.
Mangroves form a natural barrier between ocean and coastal communities. They reduce wave forces by 70 to 90% depending on the area.
They provide habitat to a wide variety of wildlife.
Mangroves are valuable reservoirs and habitats for thousands of species, including crabs, corals, mammals etc.
They provide direct food security.
They provide direct food security for nearly 250 million people in coastal areas:every square kilometre generates between 5 and 10 tonnes of fish per year.
Northwest Madagascar
Every 10 payments you make with the bonsai app, we plant a mangrove tree in Northwest Madagascar.
Since the start of Eden’s reforestation activities in Madagascar, they have produced, planted and protected over 664 million trees and empowered more than 8800 employees with fair wages.
Eden has 3 main mangrove reforestation sites in Madagascar with extensive infrastructure such as guard houses, fire towers and seed banks. They have also developed a training center for local nursery managers to gain hands-on experience in seedling management and effective reforestation techniques.
Antsanitia
Antsanitia is a vital mangrove estuary that needs long-term protection and restoration. The project site is located along the northwest coast of Madagascar, fifteen miles north of the regional capital of Mahajanga.
The projectarea has a deep-water mangrove estuary that opens to the sea and is surrounded by large swaths of mangrove forest. The estuary is a vital fish nursery for the surrounding ocean and barrier reefs and is an important fishing ground for local Malagasy.
Akalamboro
This restoration area is located on a lowland mangrove forest along the Akalamboro Estuary surrounding the Akalamboro community in northwest Madagascar. The northern edge of this estuary is part of the Baie de Baly National Park.
This mangrove forest is important because it is a deep-water canal that meets up with an extensive, freshwater river system. This makes it a vital nursery for numerous fish species, abundant Nile crocodile and multiple bird species.
Vilamatsa
Vilamatsa restoration area is located on Madagascar’s farthest western point near CapeSt. Andre and is a lowland mangrove forest surrounding the Vilamatsa community. Before this project began, the mangrove forests found in this area were severely impacted by deforestation and forest degradation from charcoal production and wood collection for cooking, construction, and other purposes.
